Dean's Welcome
Welcome from Dean Vecchiolla
Your decision to pursue a master's of social work coincides with one of the most important phases in the history of social work. With degree in hand, you will be qualified to help people overcome challenges in a variety of settings including: adoption agencies, schools, hospitals, veterans services, senior centers, prisons, mental health clinics, military support programs, public social agencies, hospice care, and corporations. According to the Federal Government Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of social workers is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016. Economic, political and societal factors demand that professional social workers be prepared for direct service, program development, administration, scholarship, grant writing, consultation, and research.
Three unique characteristics distinguish SCSSW: the advanced generalist practice approach; the ability to pursue your studies in a weekend or weekday program; and the option to enroll in a combined MSW/JD combined degree program provided jointly by SCSSW and Western New England College School of Law. Our faculty are recognized for their expertise in clinical practice, community service, scholarship, and their passion for teaching. SCSSW is student centered, community focused, committed to diversity and cultural competence, and committed to promoting continuous learning.
The field education program is structured around four areas of learning to ensure that you gain experience in developing a full range of advanced generalist social work skills. The four areas of learning are: direct service, group work, community development and organization, and administration and organizational development. You will also have a wide variety of choices for your field assignments, which ensures finding a professionally rewarding experience.
Your education will take place in a welcoming and comfortable environment that promotes positive learning. You will find that everyone, faculty, staff, and fellow graduate students alike are committed to helping you achieve success both in and out of school. All of us at the Springfield College School of Social Work share one goal: to help you become a leader in social work by providing you with an exceptional graduate experience.
I hope you will attend an Open House at the Springfield College School of Social Work to learn more about the MSW program options. Thank you for your consideration of the Springfield College School of Social Work!
Sincerely,
Francine J. Vecchiolla, Ph.D., M.S.W.,
