Documentary on African-Americans’ WWII Service Open to the Public at Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 8, 2007 – Filmmaker and educator William H. Smith will screen his documentary film “The Invisible Soldiers: Unheard Voices,” about the service of African-Americans in World War II, on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m., at Springfield College’s Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center.

Smith, who is the executive director of the Center for Diversity in the Communication Industries at Emerson College in Boston, also will present “Remembering the Pupil of the Eye,” detailing his experience in making the documentary.

The Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame named “The Invisible Soldiers” a “best documentary.” According to Julian Bond, civil rights leader and former chairman of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, it is “a rare and important contribution to preserving an accurate history of America.”

Smith’s visit is part of Springfield College’s celebration of February as Black History Month. Open to the public free of charge, the program is cosponsored by Springfield College’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and the United Campus Ministry and Spiritual Life Center.
